Wied il-Ghasri is the valley leading to this narrow gorge, in easy walking distance of the house (about 40 minutes, depending on children's legs).
After a lovely walk, about 200 steps carved into the cliff side lead down to a tiny pebbly beach.
Swimming from the beach, you can swim under a huge overhang, like a very wide open cave. The water tends to be quite cold, as it doesn't get much sun, due to the narrowness of the inlet and the high sides.
The old boathouses are carved into the rock. full size image

Looking out to sea along Wied il-Ghasri - a very long and narrow inlet whose valley leads down from our village. full size image

Donkeys used to be a common sight in Gozo, working in the fields and pulling enormous loads of hay with the farmer perched high on the top.
Sadly "mechanical donkeys" took over in the 1980s, and more recently tractors have been brought over to the island to work the fields, so the donkeys have all retired.
This one belongs to Charlie, part of the large family running Rose's Bar on Ramla. His farm supplies the fresh meat they serve at the cafe. full size image

Walking in Gozo is lovely in the Spring and Autumn - too hot in July and August. full size image

The Inland Sea, near Dwera

I took this photo when I was walking up to the Ghasri Lighthouse, which stands above our little village. It is about a half hour walk up through the fields. full size image

All of the buildings are built of local stone, which is a lovely soft sandstone. It is great for carving, but also forms into natural sculptures over years of sea winds. This stone is part of the old wall around the lighthouse, overlooking Ghasri. full size image

This is a view from Otters Bistro. Otters is on the far left hand promontory from Marsalforn Bay, and is our favourite restaurant in Marsalforn because of the fantastic setting looking straight out to sea on one side, and in towards Marsalforn on the other (and good food too!). The children can swim off the rocks just by the restaurant (with steps to help them climb out), while you relax and sip a cool drink. The photograph shows Marsalforn shelf, on the far side of the bay, from where courageous older children (and stupid adults like us!) swim out to the rock in the picture, to climb up and jump off. Great fun. Also good for snorkelling. It was a bit too rough on the day I took the picture, so we went and had a nice lunch instead. full size image

This little fishing boat is in the Inland Sea and is painted in the traditional colours of Maltese fishing boats - called Luzzu. full size image

This is a Luzzu, one of the traditional fishing boats of the Maltese Islands. This was taken at our favourite swimming and eating spot, Mgarr ix-ini, a lovely little inlet on the South of the island. full size image
