Donkeys used to be a common sight in Gozo, working in the fields and pulling enormous loads of hay with the farmer perched high on the top.
Sadly "mechanical donkeys" took over in the 1980s, and more recently tractors have been brought over to the island to work the fields, so the donkeys have all retired.
This one belongs to Charlie, part of the large family running Rose's Bar on Ramla.
His farm supplies the fresh meat they serve at the cafe. full size image

Peter spent several nights going out fishing with local fishermen Joe and Charlie.
They still use a Luzzu - one of the traditional painted fishing boats of the Maltese Islands.
Sadly, as with the whole of the mediterranean, fish stocks have declined dramatically over the last 5 years, so they can no longer make a living by fishing alone.
This was their return at dawn after several hours out at sea, using the traditional methods they have been using on the island for hundreds of years. full size image

After a nights fishing, they return to Marsalforn to spend the morning mending nets. full size image

Returning home - happy despite dwindling catches and anger at illegal Italian fishing and spear fishing, which is contributing to the destruction of sea life full size image

In late afternoon, you will sometimes see horses being brought down to the sea - this one is at Mgarr ix-ini. Sometimes they wash them, but often it is just for a cool off and a swim. full size image
